The Honors Program sponsored students and faculty to attend UB’s Distinguished Lecture Series on February 24, which featured criminal justice advocate and member of the “Central Park Five” Yusef Salaam. In 1989, at 15 years of age, Salaam and four other teenage boys of color were convicted of the rape and attempted murder of a white female jogger in Central Park. After spending years in jail, the now “Exonerated Five” were exonerated in 2002, when the rapist, whose DNA matched that discovered at the crime scene, confessed to the crime. Since then, Salaam has dedicated his energy to bringing awareness to disparities within the the criminal justice system.
