Dr. Alice Villaseñor recently spoke at a three-day conference on “Reputations, Legacies, Futures: Jane Austen, Germaine de Staël and their contemporaries, 1817-2017.”  The conference was organized by the Chawton House Library for British Women Writers, a rare-book library housed on an estate once owned by Jane Austen’s brother in the picturesque village of Chawton in Hampshire, England.

The conference investigated the literary reputations of two major European women writers who died 200 years ago. Dr. Villaseñor’s talk, “Pride and Prejudice and the Condition of England Novels of Elizabeth Gaskell and Charlotte Brontë,” focused on Jane Austen’s reception history in the Victorian period.

The conference was one of several events organized to celebrate the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death. While in Hampshire, Dr. Villaseñor was able to attend several of these events, including a special Evensong Service at Winchester Cathedral (where Jane Austen is buried).
