Dr. Bridgette Slavin Publishes Book Chapter on Children in Medieval Courts
Dr. Bridgette Slavin, Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, recently published a book chapter entitled, “Childhood in the Common Law Courts of Medieval Ireland,” in the monograph, Kids Those Days: Children in Medieval Culture (Brill Press). After the late twelfth century, two legal systems co-existed in Ireland: the traditional Brehon Law of Ireland, and English Common Law. Researchers have explored the experience of children under traditional Irish law. Dr. Slavin’s research expands upon previous scholarship to explore the legal culpability of juveniles and the protection of children against violent offenders in the areas of medieval Ireland that were under Common Law jurisdiction.
