Dr. Lola D. Kirk Attends the Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE) Conference
Dr. Lola D. Kirk, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Veterinary Technology, recently attended the 2021 Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE) Conference. This year’s conference was focused on utilizing technology and anatomical models to reduce the need for live animals in veterinary eduction (veterinary medical and veterinary technician programs alike). Lectures included advancements in educational modalities for veterinary education which allow computer programs to interface with synthetic patient models for case scenario simulation. An example of the available technologies would be a SynDaver™ model interfacing with Stage III™ simulation software. These technologies could be used in place of a live patient to run anesthetic case scenarios giving students the opportunity for more experience prior to encountering live patients. Lectures also reviewed how to build and implement procedure models for initial hands-on skill acquisition. These models could be utilized in the classroom or lab setting for demonstration and student practice of intravenous catheter placement, venipuncture, intubation, surgical preparation and much more.
Integration of classroom technologies such as microscope cameras for synchronous learning were also discussed. Some of the technologies can be used in both the remote and in-person setting which allows for greater flexibility. The presenters demonstrated how a cellphone app with an adaptor can now easily capture microscope images to aid student learning and how accessible these technologies are to students and instructors.
These new technologies will allow a more interactive teaching and learning experience while limiting the need for live animals. Live animals will always be essential to veterinary education, however we now have alternatives to ensure a sustainable future.
This conference satisfies the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) program accreditation recommendations for Program Directors as well as professional development. Dr. Kirk earned 14 hours of RACE approved continuing education.
