On Thursday March 3, Department of Education Assistant Professor Dr. Caitlin Riegel, presented at the Association for Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education (AILACTE) Conference. Her presentation, titled “Innovative Models for Teacher Education Orientations: Using a Learning Management System (LMS) to Provide Early Opportunities for Engagement and Success,” focused on how Blackboard is used to administer the orientation at the onset of Medaille’s graduate teacher education programs.

Dr. Riegel’s presentation outlined how teacher educators can ensure incoming students are positioned for success in their education programs by utilizing their institution’s LMS to host the program orientation. Specifically, Dr. Riegel described how Medaille’s Department of Educaiton uses Blackboard to administer an orientation that: can be administered virtually or on-ground, effectively prepares students for success in their program, welcomes and engages students with the Medaille community, serves as a resource to refer back to later in the program and prepares students to use the LMS before they begin coursework. The presentation concluded by having participants discuss the feasibility of restructuring their orientations to utilize their institution’s LMS. The relevance of this presentation is to update and streamline some administrative processes for higher education faculty at liberal arts colleges who are often tasked with administrative responsibilities in addition to full course loads.
