Dr. Riegel Presents at Association of Teacher Educators Conference
On Sunday August 1, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Medaille College, Dr. Caitlin Riegel, presented at the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) Conference. Her presentation, titled “Preparing for the Unexpected: Using Pear Deck to Seamlessly Transition Between In-Person and Online Teaching,” focused on preparing educators to teach in a post-COVID world where they may need to transition from in-person to online teaching.
Dr. Riegel’s presentation modeled the use of Pear Deck, an interactive presentation platform, which allows educators to present material to students in an engaging way while enabling a smooth transition between in-person and online modalities. Dr. Riegel addressed evidence-based practices suggesting the benefit of interactive presentations while illustrating how technology can be used to support active learning in both synchronous and asynchronous leanring environments. The presentation concluded by having participants join an interactive Pear Deck presentation from the student perspective in order to gain a better understanding of the platform’s utility. The relevance of this presentation for faculty of Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) is vital for developing future educators who can enter the field with the ability to teach both in-person and online, as well as seamlessly transition between the two modalities when needed.
