On Wednesday October 13, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Medaille College, Dr. Caitlin Riegel, presented at the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education (NYSCATE)-New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (NYACTE) Conference. Her presentaiton, titled “Using Community Partnerships to Enhance Culturally Responsive Pedagogy Courses in Educator Preparation Programs,” focused on how to integrate community partnerships to connect the theoretical and practical issues of diversity into Culturally Responsive Pedagogy courses.

Dr. Riegel’s presentation centered on how to cultivate and maintain a supportive partnership between a college and a community organization to provide students with knowledge regarding urban education not learned in the classroom alone, as well as prepare students to be successful when placed in urban education settings for field observations and student teaching. Dr. Riegel shared an initiative in the Department of Education at Medaille College that involved a community partner in which the Educator Preparation Program was already working with closely. Modifications to the Culturally Responsive Pedagogy course to fill in gaps in urban education preparation were identified, such as changes to course materials, push-in presentations, assignment revisions, and instructor trainings. The presentation concluded by having participants discuss the benefits and challenges to community partnerships. The relevance of this presentation is vital for Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) looking to increase the focus on culturally responsive pedagogies across various educational settings.
