On Friday November 5, assistant professors in the Department of Education at Medaille College, Dr. Caitlin Riegel and Dr. Denise Stappenbeck, presented at the Teacher Education Division (TED) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Conference held in Fort Worth, Texas. They presented alongside Dr. Colleen Wilkinson, adjunct professor at Medaille and assistant professor in Department of Education at Daemen College. Their presentaiton, titled “Grabbing the Data by the Horns: Steering Your Program towards HLPs,” focused on High Leverage Practices (HLPs) in Special Education.
Dr.’s Wilkinson, Riegel, and Stappenbeck centered their presentation on the integration of HLPs to enhance the professional readiness of graduating students, and the need for constant evaluation of teacher preparation programs. Dr. Stappenbeck provided a foundation to participants that included outlining High Leverage Practices. Dr. Riegel outlined their approach to identifying the HLPs present in each course in the program as well as their rate of exposure. Dr. Wilkinson presented the results and reviewed the next steps regarding potential programmatic and pedagogical changes. While Dr. Christine Woodcock was unable to attend, her contribution to the alignment process proved vital in reviewing each course for HLPs and scaling the rate of exposure as introductory, practicing, or mastery.
