As part of an Ecology Lab course, biology students released a red-tailed hawk with WNY Raptor and Wildlife Care on Wednesday, September 21. Students learned how to place a transmitter on a hawk, how to collect scientific data on wing length and how to draw blood from a live hawk. The hawk was kept with a surrogate during rehabilitation at WNY Raptor. It recovered well and its whereabouts are able to be tracked through the transmitter. Data on the post-release success of rehabilitated animals is lacking, and this study will help shed insight into hawk behaviors after release.
