Award-winning sports anchor Ed Kilgore and former VP of corporate relations for the Buffalo Sabres Seymour Knox IV visited Medaille College’s Buffalo campus on September 26 to speak to communication and sport management students. Organized by Medaille’s Department of Communication & Sport Studies and Department Chair Lisa Marsherall, the Legends of Sports Broadcasting Communication Luncheon saw Kilgore and Knox share their vast experience and career tips. Students were also given the opportunity to ask the two legends some of their own questions.

Kilgore, a Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame member, told students that “[finding career success] is all about getting your foot in the door, whether it is through internships or other personal contact.” He pointed out that establishing yourself as “a person and not just a resume” increases the odds of being hired.

“It’s hard to get into the media business, and it’s changed since I did it,” Kilgore added. “Nowadays, you need to learn how social media works, and learn every end of the business — how to shoot and edit, as well as report.”

Knox emphasized that for success in communication or sport management fields, “It is important to always be learning new things.” And both speakers stressed that enthusiasm and passion are key.
