Steven MacMartin, director of Medaille’s bachelor’s degree program in homeland security and a clinical assistant professor at the College, offered his insight on the outcome of the manhunt for escaped prisoners Richard Matt and David Sweat to YNN Buffalo. MacMartin told YNN that he was not surprised at the location at which authorities nabbed Matt and Sweat.
“I have always assumed … that it would be logical for them to try to get to Canada,” MacMartin said. “Where Matt was captured is almost a direct, straight line up to Canada to where Sweat was captured today.” He called the area between where the St. Lawrence River enters Canada and Maine a “walk-in spot,” adding, “The border points are controlled by buildings and gates and crossings with each country’s customs service, but between them is essentially wilderness.”
