Medaille College has received a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo to continue its Science in Bloom program. Medaille will again operate the program in conjunction with the Valley Community Association (VCA).
The only program of its kind in the area, Science in Bloom engages Buffalo Public School (BPS) middle school students from the VCA “Striving for Excellence” Youth Program. It provides greater exposure to science through mentorships with Medaille undergraduate students.
Brigitte Carrier-Auger, a senior in the veterinary technology program and a Science in Bloom teaching assistant, sees a real impact from working with younger students on campus: “By bringing the middle schoolers onto our campus in a fun setting, we hope that they can envision themselves as college students — something they may or may not have thought of before. Hopefully they see that science doesn’t just happen in a textbook; science is exciting, hands-on and interesting. For college students, teaching the concepts provides a deeper understanding of our own course materials.”
