Students taking a management information systems course at Medaille College recently worked together to create a new tracking system for the Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. (TSC). This independent nonprofit organization which addresses community need through direct service was selected as a partner for a Community-Based Learning Project with the Medaille students. With approximately 200 AmeriCorps graduates annually, TSC needed a system to track these members and further engage them in community service. The students in instructor Susan Swinarski’s class — Sarah Hawk, Alexis Kraska, Alyssa Murzynowski, Charles Panepinto, Andrew Parks, Mercedes Sulzbach and Sean Wilson — analyzed TSC’s existing system and evaluated the options available within Microsoft Office. The result is a newly designed spreadsheet that utilizes more complex database features to streamline data entry and information retrieval. Working as a team, the students were responsible for every aspect of the project.

Instrumental in setting up the project was Nicole Calamunci, Medaille’s Multicultural and Community-Based Learning Coordinator, while Information Systems Program Director Jonas Patricko oversaw the project from concept to completion.
