Mary Beth Scumaci, Clinical Associate Professor at Medaille College presented at the New York State Reading Association (NYSRA) Conference on Monday, November 13 with local author and literacy consultant, Judy Bradbury. The conference theme, Literacy for All: Full STEAM Ahead focused on the importance of teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math in the curriculum. Scumaci and Bradbury’s presentation, Using Children’s Books to Add STEAM to the Pre-K—6 Curriculum included an overview of STEAM pedagogy to guide lesson development and the importance of helping students develop the 4 C’s of 21st Century learning: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Scumaci and Bradbury provided the participants with an interactive display focusing on a variety of children’s books, educational toys, and resources that once integrated; enhance the STEAM curriculum while supporting educational standards. Lesson examples, articles and a bibliography of STEAM books were provided to participants. All participants received a free book to add to their classroom STEAM library. In addition to presenting, there were opportunities to attend sessions by well-known literacy experts in the field.
