Dr. Charles Sun, Associate Professor, Division of Veterinary and Natural Sciences

What is your education and background?

I received my B.S. degree in applied physics from Dalian University of Technology in China, and earned a master’s and a Ph.D. in experimental atomic physics from the University of Kentucky (Lexington).

I started to teach in high school when I was 23. I was named as an outstanding teacher by the city education council in 1976 because of my excellence in teaching. In 1982 when I graduated from the Dalian University of Technology, I was hired as a full time faculty member by the same University, until 1984, I went to Lexington, Kentucky to study atomic physics in University of Kentucky. After I got my Ph.D., I have been teaching in universities or colleges in America, except a few years of recovery from a fatal accident in 1994. I joined Medaille College as an assistant professor in 2002. My primary teaching assignments in Medaille are the Principles of Physics, the Physical Science, and some math courses.

What is your favorite part of working at Medaille?

I enjoy working with the faculty and staff in Medaille. I like our students. When the students are making progress, I am always very excited and happy.

What are your interests and hobbies?

Outside of work, my interests are reading good books, watching interesting movies and traveling.  My hobbies were swimming and photography before I was injured. Now I like collecting stamps, gardening and exercising.

If you could eat dinner with one famous person, who would it be? 

Mr. Xiaobo Liu, he is a Chinese literary critic, writer, professor and human rights activist.  He is currently incarcerated as a political prisoner in China.  During his fourth prison term, he was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.

If they made a movie about your life, what would it be about? 

It would be about my life after my first and second serious accidents and how as a quadriplegia, I was able to go back to work and be successful.

Optimistic. Strong. Honest.

If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?

I would visit Taiwan to see the difference from mainland China.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you like to have with you? 

Cell phone, water, food.
