Hello everyone,

I wanted to touch base with the campus in regards to the important issue of sexual assault, which has, especially recently, been very much in the news and on the minds of many of us who attend and/or work at Medaille College. Many of you may be aware of recent incidents that have taken place at the University of Virginia (Rolling Stone article), Columbia University, as well as others that have been in the news involving incidents of sexual violence.

Medaille College is committed to providing an environment free from concerns relating to discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes sexual misconduct/violence. Sexual violence refers to physical sexual acts perpetrated against a person’s will or where a person is incapable of giving consent (e.g., due to the student’s age or use of drugs or alcohol, or because an intellectual or other disability prevents the student from having the capacity to give consent). A number of different acts fall into the category of sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, sexual abuse and sexual coercion. Sexual violence can be carried out by school employees, other students or third parties. All such acts of sexual violence are forms of sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX.

Title IX protects all Medaille College students, faculty, and staff from sexual discrimination, including sexual violence. Any student, faculty, or staff member can experience sexual violence: from elementary to professional school; male and female; straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender; part-time and full-time; with and without disabilities; different races and national origins. Medaille College provides many resources to students, faculty and staff to address concerns relating to discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes sexual misconduct and violence.  Many of these resources can be found on the Title IX web page found here:  http://www.medaille.edu/offices/human-resources/title-ix

If you would like more information on Title IX, would like to report an incident (for you or another student or member of the Medaille community), or inquire about training I would urge you to contact me immediately at pmcdonald@medaille.edu, 716-880-2345, or stop by my office in the Public Safety building (2 Agassiz).  In an emergency situation, please call Public Safety at 716-880-2911.
